Homemade Mixed Spice
This warming sweet spice blend with a hint of heat is essential for Christmas and Easter times. It makes about 5 tbsp worth but I frequently double this as it's easy to get through it at festive times of the year.

  • One whole nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp whole cloves
  • 1 tsp coriander seeds
  • 1 tbsp whole allspice berries heaped
  • 1 level tbsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp ground mace
  • 1 tbsp ground ginger
  • Optional – 4 or 5 black peppercorns
  1. Grind or grate your nutmeg.
  2. Add in the allspice berries, coriander seed, cloves and peppercorns if using – grind until fine (you may need to do it in batches depending on the size of your spice grinding appliance, which can vary greatly).
  3. Now take the rest of the ready ground spices and pulse into the now ground seeds to mix well.
  4. Should you have any visible pieces left then sift the spices out and give another quick blitz before adding to the jar.
  5. Store in an airtight glass jar.
Recipe Notes

As with all spices they keep best in the dark some place cool and use them quickly so they don’t lose too much potency with prolonged storage.
